The NCAA Tournament began with a pair of play-in games last night in Dayton, but for a lot of fans around here it truly begins tonight when the Orange take the floor against Arizona State.
It’s SU’s first appearance in the First Four, which began in 2011 as a way to sneak 4 more at-large teams into the March Madness fold.
SU was the 68th and final team included in this year’s tournament, but now that they’re in anything can happen.
It was just 2 years ago that the Orange made a surprise run to the Final Four as a double digit seed which many pundits thought didn’t belong in the field at all.
If they’re to make a similar run (under similar circumstances) this year they’ll have to win an extra game, as tonight’s clash with the Sun Devils determines who will face 6th seeded TCU Friday as that portion of the bracket begins play in earnest.
ASU began the year 12-0 and rose as high as #3 in the AP poll, but they crashed back down to Earth during conference play, finishing 8-10 in the mediocre Pac-12 and then losing to Colorado in their first conference tournament game.
The Sun Devils are one of the highest scoring teams in the country, while the Cuse boast one of the nation’s best defenses.
This clash of styles will air on truTV at approximately 9:10, following the conclusion of the 16-seed play-in game between North Carolina Central and Texas Southern.
