The New York Yankees set a new record on Monday (July 6) by becoming the first American League team to strike out 17 times in back-to-back games. This occurred during their loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, marking their tenth defeat in the last 12 games. The Rays' pitcher, Ian Seymour, played a significant role by striking out 12 batters over 5 1/3 innings, a feat not achieved against the Yankees in over 50 years.
Seymour's performance was complemented by the Rays' offensive strength, with Hunter Feduccia and Yandy Díaz hitting consecutive home runs in the fourth inning. Victor Mesa Jr. also contributed with a home run, helping the Rays extend their lead in the American League East to four games over the Yankees.
Paul Goldschmidt and José Caballero each struck out four times, highlighting the Yankees' offensive struggles. Despite having 11 hits, the Yankees failed to capitalize, reaching double digits for the first time since June 17.
The Rays' bullpen continued the strikeout trend, with Bryan Baker securing his 24th save of the season. The Yankees will look to bounce back in the next game, sending Gerrit Cole to the mound against the Rays' Shane McClanahan.
