Pregnant Woman Saves Husband From Shark Attack In Florida

A 30-year-old man from Georgia was attacked by a bull shark while he was snorkeling in the Florida Keys. Andrew Eddy was on a private boat with his pregnant wife Margot Dukes-Eddy, and her family near a reef off the coast of Marathon, Florida.

As soon as Eddy jumped into the water, the massive shark latched onto his shoulder. When Margot saw Andrew was in danger, she didn't hesitate and jumped into the water to rescue him. She managed to pull him back onto the boat, and he was taken to the shore.

"Dukes saw the shark's dorsal fin, and then blood filling the water," Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Aguanno wrote in his report. "Dukes, without hesitation, dove into the water and pulled Eddy to the safety of the boat."

When they reached dry land, paramedics were waiting, and Andrew was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Officials did not know his condition but said the damage to his shoulder was severe.

Witnesses told deputies that had seen the bull shark earlier in the day and estimated it was about ten feet long.

Unprovoked shark attacks are rare in the Florida Keys. Since 1882, there have been just 17 attacks reported in the chain of tiny islands off the southern coast of Florida, according to the International Shark Attack File.

"This was a very rare medical crisis for the Florida Keys, but everyone came together — including those witnesses on the boat to 911 Communicators to all our emergency responders — in order to ensure this victim received life-saving care," Sheriff Rick Ramsay said.
