New York Woman Apologizes After Telling Cops Black Man Was Threatening Her

A white woman from New York City is apologizing after a video of her calling 911 and falsely claiming a black man was threatening her life went viral. Christian Cooper was bird watching in Central Park when he saw Amy Cooper letting her dog run around without a leash.

Cooper asked Amy to put her dog on a leash, but she refused, and the two began to argue. Christian started filming as Amy called 911, and falsely claimed that Christian had threatened her life.

"I'm taking a picture and calling the cops," Amy Cooper says in the video. "I'm going to tell them there's an African American man threatening my life."

By the time the police arrived, both Amy and Christian had left. Christian's sister posted the video of the encounter on Twitter, where it quickly went viral.

"We live in an age of Ahmaud Arbery where black men are gunned down because of assumptions people make about black men, black people, and I'm just not going to participate in that," Christian told NBC.

Amy issued an apology for her actions after her employer, investment management company Franklin Templeton, announced that she had been placed on administrative leave.

"I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone, especially to that man, his family," Amy said in a phone interview with NBC New York. "It was unacceptable, and I humbly and fully apologize to everyone who's seen that video, everyone that's been offended… everyone who thinks of me in a lower light, and I understand why they do."
